Industry Insight: Why Yacht Cybersecurity Is Becoming Part of the Modern Ownership Conversation

The conversations shaping the superyacht industry are constantly evolving. Alongside sustainability, regulation and changing market dynamics, cybersecurity has become another topic moving firmly up the agenda for owners and industry professionals alike. At a recent industry breakfast, experts from across the maritime sector explored how cyber risk now extends well beyond onboard IT systems. Today, it is a consideration throughout a yacht’s lifecycle—from construction and delivery to ownership, charter operations and beyond. While cyber threats affect every industry, the superyacht sector presents a unique profile. High-value transactions, internationally mobile assets and the expectation of complete discretion make yachting an attractive target for increasingly sophisticated criminal activity.
One area receiving particular attention was authorised push payment fraud. Criminals are becoming increasingly convincing, using spoof email domains that closely resemble legitimate company addresses before, in many cases, moving conversations onto platforms such as WhatsApp. A simple message stating, “I’ve changed my number,” can form part of a carefully orchestrated attempt to redirect payments. For charter transactions, where payments often follow strict contractual timelines, these risks have prompted discussions around new contractual protections. The industry is beginning to explore mechanisms that allow parties to resolve fraudulent payment incidents without automatically jeopardising the charter itself. The discussion also highlighted the growing prevalence of ransomware and data exfiltration attacks, where sensitive information may be stolen before systems are encrypted. As yachts become more connected, operational technologies are also part of the conversation, with GPS jamming and spoofing cited as practical examples of cyber risks extending beyond traditional office networks. Cybersecurity is now embedded within the International Safety Management (ISM) framework, reflecting its growing importance across the wider maritime industry and reinforcing that digital resilience is now considered part of operational best practice. For yacht owners, the message was not one of alarm but of awareness. As ownership, charter and yacht operations become increasingly digital, cybersecurity is becoming another important consideration within the broader ownership experience.
At MYSEA, we believe staying close to conversations like these is part of delivering exceptional advice to our clients. Whether assisting with the purchase or sale of a yacht, or connecting owners with trusted charter management partners, understanding the wider issues shaping our industry allows us to provide informed guidance at every stage of the ownership journey.
